Diploma in Process Operations and Maintenance

This two-year diploma program has an equal blend of theoretical, practical, ethical and environmental based courses that meet the needs of the country, industries, and society as a whole.

 

Program Description:

The Diploma in Process Operations and Maintenance is designed for individuals seeking a two-year qualification, as well as for students currently enrolled in the existing four-year degree program. This full-time program spans four semesters (two years) and requires the successful completion of 66 credits as outlined in the curriculum. The diploma also includes a mandatory industry orientation program and internship to provide practical exposure. It is aligned with Oman’s National Qualifications Framework and reflects the objectives and standards set by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI) and other relevant stakeholders.

Program Objectives

College of Engineering offers ABET compliant BEng programs, which are envisioned to produce engineering diploma holders and graduates to lead from the front in pursuit of systematic and continuous change in the areas of academic, industry and society.

The Diploma Process Operations and Maintenance program is a two-year degree program for those who want to gain knowledge in a focused area of Process Operations and Maintenance engineering to pursue a career in industry or continue in graduate studies.

The Diploma exit opportunity is mainly for the students who are enrolled to the existing four-year degree program (Reference no. No. 5/3/193/2019, 3-Resolution No. 0‪7/0‪3/2‪019). The Diploma is awarded after the completion of 66 credits of undergraduate work listed in the curriculum below including compulsory industry orientation program and Internship. This Diploma program provides principal learning in a process operations and maintenance  field, intended to lead students directly to a job or prepare them for continuing their studies towards bachelor’s degree on later date when they return to the university.

The following Educational Objectives of this program are attainable by the diploma graduates within few years after graduation from the college.

  2. PEO 02:Successfully complete or pursue advanced education, research and development, and other creative and innovative efforts in science, engineering, and technology.
  3. PEO 03:Participate as leaders with intellectual strength, creativity, professional skills and lifelong learning adaptable to the contemporary regional and global needs.
  4. PEO 04:Conduct themselves as both responsible professionals and global citizens who understand ethical issues, environment and societal needs

The college fully supports social, recreational, and extracurricular activities as part of its strategic plan to develop well-rounded graduates who embody leadership and entrepreneurial values. Students have numerous opportunities to engage with established student chapters of professional organizations, providing exposure to international professionals and enabling them to stay updated with the latest technological advancements. These interactions also allow students to network with engineers and experts worldwide. Additionally, students can pursue certifications that showcase their skills, passion, and proficiency in specific areas, further enhancing their professional profile.

Program Articulation:

Students after successful completion of diploma and if they meet the set academic grades can apply for continuing their studies for BEng/ BTech degree program in the same chosen field of study or any other relevant field at  NU or any other Higher  Education Institutions.

Career Opportunities

The program offers foundational and specialized learning in Process Operations and Maintenance, preparing students either for immediate employment or for continuing their studies toward a bachelor’s degree at a later stage. Graduates of the diploma develop the skills to design solutions for well-defined technical problems, assist in the engineering design of systems, components, or processes, and contribute effectively as members of technical teams.

Diploma holders in Process Operations and Maintenance are equipped for employment in the process and oil & gas industries, with potential roles including:

    • Production Operator / Technician / Technologist
    • Maintenance Technician
    • Quality Assurance / Quality Control Specialist
    • Field Maintenance Personnel
    • Regulatory Compliance Officer, among others

International Internship and Collaborations:

The College of Engineering has strong collaboration with local and regional industries like Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), National Innovation Academy, National Aluminium Products Company, Oman Chlorine Company, Asian Paints, Occidental Oman, Oman Fiber Optic Company, Jotun Paints, Shell Oman, Oman gas company, Tebodin, Bio Products Oman SAOC, Galfar, Aspen Technology Inc. The collaborating industries offer support to our students by providing industrial internship opportunities, and site visits, sharing real-world insights by facilitating guest lecturers and workshops, and participating in career fairs. The industry link will ensure our students are equipped with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge by exposing them to the use of sophisticated and specialist equipment during site visits and similar opportunities. The students are encouraged to undergo international internships in the affiliates / collaborating university.
