Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

About Department

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers programs that are supporting the construction industry in Oman and the world. Civil Engineering discipline deals with design, construction and maintenance of buildings, bridges, airports, dams, highways, railways, water supply and sewerage networks, and wastewater treatment plants including water desalination technology. It also involves in waste management and finds solutions to different environmental issues that include waste to energy systems, solid waste management and air pollution.

BEng Civil Engineering program is designed to comply with Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET). At year 3, a civil engineering student has the option either to continue with Bachelor degree in civil engineering or can select one of the five available concentrations (specialties) which are Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resource Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Construction Engineering. Quantity Surveying and Cost Management program is compliant with Royal Institute of Charted Surveyors (RICS). This program has a Diploma exit in Quantity Surveying at year 2. The department also offers Master program in “Construction Management” in collaboration with Glasgow Caledonian University (UK) and has plan to offer additional master programs in near future to support Oman Vision 2040 and the UN Sustainable Goals Development.

Our laboratories have state of the art equipment with most modern technology and software. These labs have two roles, to cover the lab components of the curriculum and carry out research projects. The students also are given a practical training on advanced software in Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying to equip them with tools that enhance their employability.

We have reliable industry partners to place our students for Industrial internship which is a great opportunity that provide them with hand on experience on engineering practice. Our industry network includes but not limited to Construction companies, consulting offices, government institutions, cement concrete and steel factories, and material testing laboratories. For students with excellent performance, two additional opportunities are available, international internship with our partners in the world and research projects that are funded by the Research Council of Oman. These projects bring innovative solutions to real-life engineering problems with possibility to publish research papers and attend local and international conferences.

The department conducts short training courses for the industry professionals and provides consultancy services to the public and private sectors in the different disciplines of civil engineering, environmental engineering and Quantity Surveying.
