In the Marine Engineering Programme, our students will be taught how to operate, maintain, and repair all machinery onboard any type of ship of any size and tonnage. In our department, this academic program emphasizes hands-on experiences that expand on your classroom learning. Our Diploma and Bachelor degrees will enable you to implement the knowledge you gain through your study into future jobs. Due to the knowledge imparted in fields like machinery, turbines, boilers, automatic systems and electrotechnology, this programme allows that our graduates have attractive skills for companies and/or factories working not only in the shipping industry. The academic program can lead you to obtain at the same time the professional Certificates of Competency of Engineer Officer on Watch, 2nd Engineer and Chief Engineer issued by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology in Oman.

The duration of the Marine Engineering Officer (MEO) Programme at Diploma Level is three years, equal to six semesters. Four semesters will be at IMCO, with semesters three and six at sea for an apprenticeship. A combined total of 12 months’ sea- and workshop time is required for MEO students of which a minimum of 6 months should be sea-time. Students will also receive a Certificate of Completion (CoC) of the “Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch” course, in accordance with the International Maritime Organization’s model course 7.04, along with the Marine Engineering Officer at Diploma Level. The CoC will be issued by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, Information Technology (MTC) after the diploma graduate has passed an oral examination conducted by MTC.

The duration of the Marine Engineering Officer (MEO) Programme at Bachelor Level is one year, equal to two semesters. For those officers and students who only want to receive a certificate of marine engineering course at the management level, the opportunity is provided that at the end of the semester 7, the certificate of completion of the Chief Engineer Officer and Second Engineer Officer course in Management level, in accordance with the International Maritime Organization’s model course 7.02.
Marine Engineering Officer (MEO) Program at Bachelor Level also receive the Certificate of Completion of Chief Engineer Officer and Second Engineer Officer course in Management level.

As part of the study, training will be done on high-tech engine room simulators and machine laboratories to prepare students as effectively as possible for their professional career. Using simulators, for instance, students will learn what procedures must be followed in the Engine Room and how to act professionally in emergency situations.
