Advanced Fuels Technology & Systems Lab

The main objective of the laboratory is to provide a challenging environment for researchers to comprehend core concepts in fuel processing, combustion science, and also to afford the ability to carry out research in the area of power generation using advanced fuels. This laboratory shall play a critical role in the following research domains in Sultanate as listed below:

  • Integration of thermal and solar desalination plants with diesel engine/process industries.
  • Synthesis of Advanced Alternative fuels from waste feedstock available in Oman.
  • Investigation of fuel properties by adding new potential additives/chemicals.
  • Fuel economy/composition/emission effects of diesel engine power plants.
  • Spray combustion modeling, Spray Atomization/Diagnostics.
  • Prediction of physical significance of ignition delay of fuels.
  • Zero Emission Control Techniques.

The advanced fuels laboratory is well equipped with sophisticated facilities to carry out the following research works:

  1. To conduct experiments (as per SAE Std.) in a DAQ-assisted Diesel engine with Eddy current dynamometer setup to investigate the combustion parameters (such as Heat Release Rate, Cylinder Pressure vs q, Ignition Delay, etc.).
  2. To measure harmful emissions from the diesel engine using high-quality emission analyzers (such as AVL Di-Gas / Kane AUTOplus 5-2 Gas Analyzer, Kane Auto600 smoke meter).
  3. To analyze & and determine the fuel properties (such as Calorific Value, Kinematic Viscosity, Carbon Ash Residue, Flash & Fire point, etc.) as per ASTM stds.
  4. To determine the evaporation time for the fuels by using a digital hot-plate evaporation test setup.

Overall, the laboratory will be utilized for both research and instructional purposes for PhD/UG/PG scholars in the area of Mechanical/Automobile/Chemical/Energy/Process Engineering streams. Moreover, the above lab fulfills one of the pillars of the Oman Vision 2040, owing to its relevance in the area of renewable energy, and environmental sustainability.
