he Marine Engineering program empowers students to become competent and skilled professionals capable of making meaningful contributions to the maritime industry and advancing their careers in Marine Engineering. In the Marine Engineering Program, students are taught how to operate, maintain, and repair all machinery onboard ships of any type, size, and tonnage.
The Department of Marine Engineering offers a variety of courses that align with the criteria set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The curriculum covers fields as defined in IMO STCW 2010 A-III/1. The three-year undergraduate degree program is designed to address all aspects of training in engineering. Throughout the program, students receive courses on basic engineering, shipbuilding and marine engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, and other related subjects.

The program is suitable for individuals who have completed Grade 12 in the science stream and aspire to pursue a successful career as an engineer in the maritime industry. Graduates of Marine Engineering are qualified to work onboard vessels and in shore positions such as:
Students are required to register for two internship modules during their entire education, both of which must be conducted onboard vessels. These internships are arranged by NU-IMCO, which has agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with several international shipping companies. The Maritime Department collaborates with these international shipping companies to arrange the cadet internship planning. Students who intern with shipping companies often find permanent employment with them upon graduation.
Prerequisites for Maritime Studies Internship:
The Seafarer Medical Check for DO/ME Student must be obtained from one of the recognised medical practitioners approved by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) in Oman. The list of approved practitioners can be obtained from the Admission and Registration Office. If the medical condition of a student is reported unfit for sea service, the option of changing major/specialisation is given. Also, students have the right to undergo the Seafarer Medical Check more than once and they are responsible for the medical check fees. The medical check is normally valid for two years.
When students go to sea for their practical training, they must have a Seaman’s Book. This document can only be obtained if a student has a valid Seafarer Medical Check issued by a practitioner approved by MTCIT and a Basic Safety Training (STCW) Certificate of Proficiency. The Seamen’s Book can be requested from MTCIT.
