NU CARBON FOOTPRINT ASSESSMENT (CFA) PROJECT

National University (NU) is committed to contributing to the achievement of the Oman Net Zero target and has taken several initiatives which include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Sustainability is introduced as one of the Destinations in the NU Strategic Plan
  2. NU Ranked 3 years consecutively in THE IMPACT Ranking based on the UN SDG 2030 Goals
  3. NU Ranked by Green Metric as a Sustainable Campus

NU has taken keen steps towards carbon neutrality and this CFA project for establishing baseline greatly helped the university. CAF measured the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with an organization, product, service, or individual and involved calculating the amount of carbon dioxide () and other GHGs emitted into the atmosphere because of various activities.

To know NU’s carbon footprint and to reduce it, a baseline needs to be established and hence NU appointed a Consultant M/s Unicorn International LLC for first level CFA at NU Campuses. M/s Unicorn who has the expertise in conducting such assessments and providing NU with high-level mitigation strategies. The assessment typically included data collection, emissions calculations, identification of emission sources, analysis, and reporting. Its benefits include the understanding of emissions, Identifying areas for improvement and opportunities for reduction, and Compliance. By conducting a carbon footprint assessment, the NU initiated the first step towards reducing its environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable future.

Together Towards Excellence

This is the first comprehensive analysis and report on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and carbon footprint of the NU, Oman. The study provided an overview of emissions generated by activities across all NU campuses including Head Quarters & College of Pharmacy, College of Engineering, School of Foundation Studies, College of Medicine and Health Sciences and International Maritime College during the period of September 2022 to August 2024. It includes the scope of work, study area description, time frame, methodology, data collection, and GHG emission calculations. The report has been prepared in accordance with the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Inventories (GPC), an accounting and reporting standard for cities – version 1.1.
