The Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (AIRC) is a national research and innovation hub under the College of Engineering, National University, Oman, dedicated to advancing the frontiers of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address pressing challenges in education, healthcare, agriculture, environment, tourism, and society.

Our research spans five core areas: AI in Education, Healthcare AI, Agricultural & Environmental Intelligence, Responsible & Ethical AI, and Applied Robotics. These pillars reflect our mission to build smarter, more sustainable, and inclusive communities through AI-driven solutions.

AIRC is also home to the newly established Robotics & Intelligent Systems Hub, which supports research and development in autonomous systems, agricultural robotics, and real-world AI-powered solutions for Oman’s key sectors.

AIRC serves as a catalyst for impactful research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and capacity building—positioning Oman as a regional leader in responsible, applied AI innovation.

New Extension:

Robotics & Intelligent Systems Hub

As part of its strategic expansion, AIRC is launching the Robotics & Intelligent Systems Hub, which will serve as a dedicated space for the design, development, and prototyping of autonomous and semi-autonomous systems.

Key focus areas include:

  • Agricultural Robotics (e.g., MANIC Tree Trekker)
  • AI-driven automation for smart cities
  • Assistive robotics for inclusion and accessibility

The Robotics Hub will also support hands-on learning, final-year projects, and interdisciplinary research across engineering, computer science, and AI.

1. AI in Education

We develop intelligent systems to transform how students learn, teachers teach, and institutions make data-driven decisions.

2. AI in Healthcare

We apply deep learning, image analysis, and multimodal data integration to improve diagnostics, treatment planning, and healthcare delivery.

  • AI-Powered Decision Support System for Oral Cancer Treatment – Integrating clinical, demographic, and image data to support oncologists.

Medical Imaging AI Models – Research in pathology, detection, and radiology.

3. AI for Agricultural & Environment

Our AI systems support sustainable agriculture and biodiversity by enabling early detection and precision monitoring.

  • Red Palm Weevil Detection System – Early detection using machine learning and image analysis (in collaboration with MAFWR).
  • Tree Trekker Robot (MANIC) – Automated palm climber for efficient and safe harvesting.

4. Responsible AI & Ethical Policy

We promote the development of inclusive, transparent, and culturally aware AI frameworks aligned with UNESCO and ALECSO values.

5. AI Systems & Robotics

We design and prototype AI-driven robots and automation systems for field deployment, research, and education.
