FAQs for International Students

The National University of Science and Technology (NU) student body currently comprises about 33 nationalities from the GCC countries and around the world, making the University’s campuses a beautiful blend of different cultures. The International Admissions Office at NU assists the international students with immigration, visa issues and other issues related to their study at the University. 2. What do I need to know about the Sultanate of Oman?

You will learn a lot simply by living and studying in the Sultanate of Oman, but it is best to acquire as much information as possible before you come to the Sultanate of Oman. Websites such as https://www.experienceoman.om/  and https://goo.gl/wph7Dj provide good information.

4. Who is a student visa for?

A student visa is for a university or a college student studying in the Sultanate of Oman who has been accepted for full-time study.

5. What is the Student Residence Visa?

A Student Residence Visa is issued to a foreign national to allow the individual to reside legally in the Sultanate of Oman.

6. Does NU provide a Student Residence visa for its international students?

Yes. NU will assist accepted international students in applying for a student visa, if needed, as per the Sultanate of Oman’s government rules and regulations.

7. Can I apply for a visa if my passport is valid for less than 6 months?

No. You need to make sure that your passport is valid for a minimum of six months.

8. Can I send my required visa documents by email?

9. Is there a possibility that my visa will get rejected?

Your visa application will be reviewed, and the decision will be made by the concerned Sultanate of Oman authorities. NU is not responsible for any rejection from local authorities.

10. What is the term of validity of the student’s residence visa?

Currently, a student visa is given for new students for a duration of 2 years, renewable every 2 years depending on how many semesters a student has until graduation.

11. I am a local GCC Citizen. Should I apply for a Residence Visa in the Sultanate of Oman?

No, GCC citizens do not require a Visa to enter the country. However, the students from GCC Countries have to apply for a Civil Status Card in the Sultanate of Oman. Please show your GCC country passport or national ID card at the point of entry into the Sultanate of Oman.

12. I want to apply for a Visit Visa. Will NU be able to provide a Visit Visa for Students?

No, you have to arrange the visit visa request with a travel agency.

NU assists only if a student is registered with NU

13. Can my family travel with me?

Yes. However, they would not be allowed to travel on your student visa and would require different visas for themselves.

NU normally does not sponsor visas for other members of the student’s family

14. Can I sponsor my parents?

No, students are not allowed to sponsor their parents.

15. Can I work on my Student Visa?

No, students are not allowed to work full-time or part-time on a student visa. Students can complete their internship that is related to their study. However, they have to get a No Objection Letter from the International Admissions Office.

16. How can I apply for a No Objection Letter?

Send an email to the International Admissions Office with your request and identify the purpose of the No Objection Letter (issuing driving license, internship, letter to consulates, etc.)

17. I already have a Residence Visa. Am I required to apply for a Student Visa?

If you are resident in the Sultanate of Oman, then you are not obliged to change your sponsor unless you would like to.

18. What are the International Admissions Office working hours?

Our working hours are Sunday–Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or by appointment. For appointments or questions, please email the International Admissions Office ([email protected]) or the External and International Relations Office ([email protected]).

19. How do I apply for the Student Visa if I am an International, non-resident applicant who is not a GCC national?

If you are an international, non-resident applicant who is not a GCC national and have been accepted to full-time study in NU undergraduate or graduate program, the university is able to provide you with a Student Residence Visa, enabling you to study and reside in the Sultanate of Oman. You must apply for the Student Residence Visa before arriving to the Sultanate of Oman.

20. I received a copy of my Student Visa by email. What should I do?

Once your Student Visa is ready, we will send you a copy of your document to the email you mentioned in the request form. You have to print a colored copy of your online visa and keep it with your passport.

21. When should I buy my flight ticket?

We recommend that you purchase your flight ticket after your Student Visa is ready. NU will not be responsible if you have purchased  your flight ticket and the visa is not ready by the date of your travel, as we cannot know in advance when the visa will be issued.

22. Is there any process I should follow at the airport?

Make sure your visa copy is inside your passport as the Sultanate of Oman Immigration officers will need to stamp your visa copy. Keep your passport and stamped visa in a safe place, as we will need to use them to complete the residency process. We recommend that, on arrival at the airport,  you buy a Sultanate of Oman SIM card to have a local mobile number.
