Bowsher, Oman – December 4, 2024 – The National University of Science and Technology (NU) hosted the much-anticipated NU Day Poster Competition at its headquarters in Bowsher, celebrating the innovative spirit and creativity of students from across Oman. The event, held under the esteemed presence of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the Vice-Chancellor, university executives, faculty, and students, highlighted the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for social good.
The competition, themed “Artificial Intelligence for Social Good,” invited participants to propose sustainable AI-driven solutions to pressing societal challenges. Open to both higher education and school students, the competition served as a platform for young minds to showcase their talent and forward-thinking ideas.
The response to the competition was overwhelming, with 70 entries received. Of these, 64 posters were shortlisted in the College Category and three in the School Category. The posters were evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges comprising experts from NU and other institutions in Oman and the United Kingdom.
During the awards ceremony, the winners were announced as follows:
School Category: First Place – Jayavardhini Nivas and Srija from Indian School Al Maabela. Second Place – Aqeedath Khanum from Indian School Al Ghubra.
College Category: First Place – Design and Development of AI-driven Web Application to Predict Alzheimer’s Disease Progression – A collaborative project by Abraham Varghese, Vinu Sherimon, Ben George, Fatimah Ameen, and Meera Sam Fanasheh from UTAS Muscat and NU’s College of Medicine & Health Sciences. Second Place – Computational Intelligence-based Condition Monitoring of Wind Turbines – Dima and her team from NU’s College of Engineering. Third Place – AI-powered Medical Image Diagnosis System for Oral Cancer Detection – Raneem Rashid and Mariam Mohammed from NU’s College of Engineering.
The competition was coordinated by the College of Advanced Technology. Professor Vallavaraj Athinarayanan, Dean of the college, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the NU leadership, emphasizing the participants’ dedication and the narrow margins that distinguished the winners. “Every participant is a winner today. The quality and depth of each submission reflect the bright future ahead for AI and innovation in Oman,” he remarked.
The event concluded with the Chairman, Vice-Chancellor, and university executives congratulating the winners and acknowledging the pivotal role of technology in addressing societal needs.
The NU Day Poster Competition reaffirmed NU’s commitment to fostering innovation, collaboration, and the application of emerging technologies to solve real-world problems, aligning with the university’s vision of inspiring future leaders in technology and science.
