Welcome to department of pediatrics. Our aims is to ensure that the students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills fulfilling the good medical practice domains. We help students to practice safe pediatrics tailored to the common problems in Oman but not forgetting the need for prepare them for postgraduate study and practice in different part of the world.
We emphasize good communication skills and competency in paediatric history taking and performing physical examination of infants and children and appreciate the differences in managing the young from the adult is our priority.
Our department uses different modalities of teaching methods to ensure that the students master and retain the basic core knowledge and skills in pediatrics and also concentrate on the clinical skills including communication diagnostic reasoning, critical thinking as well as medical ethics.
Pediatrics Sub-internship (MSCS0605)
CLO 1: Relate the pathophysiological mechanism to the causation and manifestation of the common acute and chronic pediatrics problem in general and particularly in Oman
CLO 2: Taking focused pediatric history and performing clinical examination to elicit clinical findings using appropriate skills and standard techniques taking into consideration the age of the child.
CLO 3: Formulate provisional diagnosis based on the focused history and clinical examination findings using the skill of critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning and correlation of signs and symptoms.
CLO 4: Create an evidence-based investigation plan to confirm the diagnosis of the child’s chief complaint.
CLO 5: Construct a problem-oriented evidence-based management plan (EBM) according to history, clinical examination, and the result of the investigations.
CLO 6: Display professionalism, good communication skills and professional behavior among peers, children, families and other health care teams.
Pediatrics Clerkship (MJCS0505)
CLO 1: Record history of children from birth to 12 years.
CLO 2: Demonstrate general and systemic examination of children.
CLO 3: Interpret the growth of children to identify the abnormal ones.
CLO 4: Explain the development of children with chronological age, noting the delayed development.
CLO 5: Recognize the common Pediatric problems to manage them effectively.
CLO 6: Identify common investigations to diagnose routine problems in children.
CLO 7: Demonstrate the skills to counsel parents of children on all common Pediatric problems.
Clinical Genetics and Counselling (MPRC 0417)
CLO 1: Demonstrate the knowledge of the basics of clinical genetics and its importance in diagnosis, counseling, and care.
CLO 2: Infer the significance of genetic alterations in common diseases.
CLO 3: Apply the basic principles of clinical genetics for history taking, pedigree analysis, dysmorphology description, diagnosis, selection of appropriate testing, and interpretation of results.
CLO 4: Describe the diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions for prevalent genetic diseases in Oman.
CLO 5: Utilize the results of genetic testing for genetic counseling.
CLO 6: Outline the counseling techniques and ethical issues in genetic counseling.
