Department of

Biochemistry

About department

The department runs the Biochemistry & Genetics (MPRC0205) a 32-week course which provides the MD2 students with knowledge of the biochemical processes of the human body in health and disease. To accomplish the college mission statement and program learning outcomes, the department adopts different student-centered teaching methods, based on inquiry-based learning educating its graduates to be competent in the skills of critical thinking and lifelong learning.

The faculty of the department are involved in various academic and administrative activities of the college. The department encourages students to develop high-order inquiry skills by exploring research topics of their interest and gaining experience in conducting research. The faculty also encourages students to participate in student journal clubs.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the structure, function, and metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids with relevant metabolic disorders.
  • Discuss the principles and deficiency manifestations of vitamins and minerals.
  • Apply the knowledge of pH and electrolyte homeostasis to solve acid-base disorders.
  • Discuss the molecular mechanisms of gene regulation and relate them to common genetic disorders.
  • Explain the mechanisms and alterations in signal transduction pathways of specific hormones that can lead to human disease
