Message

Dear Students,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the National University of Science and Technology. Formerly known as Oman Medical College, our institution has been shaping future medical professionals since 2000. Over 1390 students have graduated with MD degrees and are now successfully practicing or pursuing further studies both in Oman and internationally. We proudly maintain an affiliation with West Virginia University in the United States.

Nestled in the tranquil surroundings of Sohar, our college provides an ideal environment for learning. The traditional and modest architecture of our campus reflects our mission to meet the healthcare needs of Oman and beyond.

Our state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, including the region’s premier anatomy laboratory, are designed with students’ interests in mind. Our excellent library offers a wealth of resources both offline and online, and our IT department ensures continuous Wi-Fi access.

Clinical training begins in our skills lab and continues with hands-on at recognized hospitals and healthcare centers in the South and North Al Batinah Regions.

We are proud of our diverse and highly qualified faculty, who bring experience from esteemed national and international institutions. As certified medical educators, they are committed to staying current in their fields. Our recently revised, learner-centered curriculum uses modern educational methods to meet global standards.

I am delighted to announce that our MD program has achieved TEPDAD accreditation, adhering to WFME standards. This significant milestone underscores our dedication to excellence in medical education. Additionally, we are excited to introduce our new BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) program, expanding our academic offerings and providing new opportunities for our students.

Biography

Prof Mohammed Al Shafaee graduated from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University with an MD degree in 1993. After completing a 4-year- residency program in Family and Community Medicine at Sultan Qaboos University in 1998, he received the membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners – London (MRCGPI) in 2003.  Subsequently he earned his PhD in Health System Management and Public Health from the University of Hull, United Kingdom in 2001. He also holds a professional diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of Liverpool, UK (1996).

Prof Al Shafaee is currently the Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (COMHS), formerly known as Oman Medical College, at the National University of Science and Technology from August 2019 to date. He was the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Community Service at COMHS since August 2014.

Prior to joining the National University, he was working at the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University for 21 years, where he assumed multiple leadership positions. He chaired the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health from 2006 to 2014. He also held the position of Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs from 2004 to 2006.

Prof Al Shafaee was the first professor of Family Medicine in Oman. He contributed greatly to the establishment and development of Family Medicine in Oman and this region. In 2011, he was awarded a Certificate of Commendation by the Royal College of General Practitioners, London at a ceremony held at the British Embassy in Muscat recognising his exceptional contribution to family medicine and primary health care at the national and international levels.

 

Prof Al Shafaee has a prominent role in the advancement of medical education in the Sultanate through his outstanding contributions to curriculum design and implementation specifically in the field of family medicine. For almost 10 years, he was the representative of Oman in the Arab Board of Medical Specialties; specialty of family medicine. Prof Al Shafaee served as an external examiner for the Kuwaiti and the Egyptian boards of family medicine.

Internationally, Prof Al Shafaee served as a focal point for the membership exams of the Royal College of General Practitioners in Oman and the region (2007-2014). He is a member of the International Organization of Family Physicians, WONCA and a founding member of WONCA branch in the Middle East, where he serves on the Executive Council. He also served as an external examiner for the Arab board in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and KSA

Prof Al Shafaee has published more than 60 articles in peer reviewed journals. He supervised many Master’s and PhD students during his tenure at Sultan Qaboos University. His research had an impact on the Omani society and has positively influenced the health outcomes.

Prof Al Shafaee is a member of the Board of Trustees of Oman Medical Specialty Board. He was also a member of the Executive Council of Sohar Healthy City Project, Chairman of the Lifestyles Committee until 2011 and a member of the Sohar Development Committee and Head of its Projects Committee (2007-10). Prof Al Shafaee has participated in a large number of international conferences around the world. He was actively involved in the chairing and organizing many regional and international conferences. In addition he received invitations from the WHO and Arab organizations to participate in various seminars and workshops.
