School of Foundation Studies

The General Foundation Program at the School of Foundation Studies ( SoFS) is a preparatory program that supports professional degree programs in Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy in keeping with the Oman Academic Standards [OAS] and approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation [MOHERI]. The students joining GFP after placements, undertake a one-year study program divided into two main semesters [F1& F2] and a third semester [F3] only for Medicine and Pharmacy students as an additional preparatory course. The courses on offer include:

  • English Language and Study Skills 1 & 2 [FEL001&02]
  • English Language & Study Skills 3 [ESP001] for F3 which includes English language and vocabulary related to Medicine and Pharmacy as well as revises concepts in Biology and Chemistry
  • Basic & Pure Mathematics [FBM001 & FPM001]
  • Computing Skills 1 & 2 [FCS001 & 02].

The medium of instruction is English, and a semester system is followed with 18 weeks for F1 & F2 with intakes happening in Fall [September] and Spring [February] and an 8-week semester in Summer [June] for F3.

SoFS has graduated six cohorts starting from Fall 2018 – Spring 2021 with approximately 500 students per academic year [AY] [September – August]. SoFS has currently 61 staff members [which includes faculty, administrative staff, and support staff]. As an independently operating campus, SoFS offers several provisions for GFP students and staff which includes a multi-story library, an academic wing having multi-media classrooms, large computer labs, an assembly hall, and an administrative wing for senior management. A well-equipped hostel facility on campus is provided to female students. A cafeteria and recreational facility, a coffee shop, a first aid room with an on-campus nurse, the services of a student counsellor, free Wi-Fi, and round the clock security are other additional features of the campus.

As a well experienced educational provider in the region SoFS strives to fulfill the Mission and Vision of its founders by providing a comprehensive and relevant GFP that enables students to meet their current and future educational goals and since inception, has continued the legacy of good practices of erstwhile institutions as demonstrated in the following report.

Foundation Studies

Most students will begin their journey at National University on the Foundation Program. The dedicated faculty team at our purpose-built Airport Heights Campus welcomes students and gives them the best possible preparation for their degree programs.

Structure of Program

The Foundation Program encompasses broad areas of learning such as English Language, General Study Skills, Basic Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Microsoft Office applications and Internet Research skills. These broad areas are spread across different courses

Facilities at SoFS

The School of Foundation Studies of National University of Science & Technology, has 24 well equipped classrooms which include: projectors, Smart Boards, Speakers and Wireless Internet Access.It also has 3 dedicated Computer Labs with 106 computers
