Simulation and Clinical Skills Laboratory (SimCSL) is designed to accommodate students’ learning of clinical skills to meet MD curriculum requirements. It is a safe environment for students to practice/demonstrate the required skills many times to master it under supervision and then allow them to perform the skills independently to build self-confidence without inducing harm to real patient. In addition, it is equipped to conduct objective structured clinical Examinations (OSCE).
SimCSL located in the main building of CoMHS. It can be easily accessed from the main entrance of the building through administration corridor or directly from the door at right side of the main CoMHS building entrance.
SimCSL is structured to imitate a hospital ward setting to increase fidelity and realism perceived by students and faculty. It has a total of 15 rooms with different sizes (rang from 11SQM to 29SQM) compatible for teaching and examination purposes, and 3 cubicles (each cub 10.5SQM) serve as emergency room in which it occupies hospital beds to keep full body manikin/simulator. Each room has the basic furniture such as examination coach, computer, and LCD screen to display educational materials. In addition, SimCSL has a server room and control room to manage the Audio-visual System (AV). A small storage room is attached to SimCSL supervisor office.
The work scope of SimCSL is to conduct OSCE examinations and to provide safe environment for students training utilizing manikins, task trainers, other medical equipment, and simulators/standardized patients/helpers. SimCSL has central command and control system. To manage and monitor the teaching sessions and OSCE examinations, the system uses a network to function Public Address (PA) system, AV system and Digital Signage system. Th PA system is an electronic system used for communication between the control room staff/faculty and the entire rooms of the SimCSL to make announcements, send messages and interact with students. The AV system is integrated to record OSCE examinations, and any sessions as required using fixed cameras and microphones in all rooms. The digital signage system has a multipurpose function used to display student’s name and number, date and time, scenario, and duration of the exam for each student during OSCE examinations. As well to display any visual and audible awareness materials like COVID-19 Precautionary Measures which was displayed this year. SimCSL also has a security system monitored through CCTV cameras. To ensure the use of various teaching strategies, the entire space of SimCSL is covered with internet connectivity via both landline and Wi-Fi access.
