The Department of Microbiology and Immunology supports the mission of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences by educating future doctors and healthcare professionals in the field of microbiology and immunology with a view to foster a student’s ability to solve problems in their future clinical years. The department strives to provide excellence in teaching-learning activities and engages in active research particularly in medical education and clinical microbiology in collaboration with the regional teaching hospital and diagnostic laboratory. Community engagement activities related to awareness of important infectious diseases and infection control are conducted as part of social responsiveness.
Microbiology and Immunology is a 40-weeks course in MD program (MD3) that deals with the study of the classification, morphological characteristics, and methods of transmission of pathogenic microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. The laboratory investigations, immunoprophylactic measures and the immune response that follows microbial infection in humans are discussed in detail. The course will also discuss topics like antimicrobial resistance, emerging infectious diseases, and infection control.
The course components include lectures, practical, course assignments, and small group sessions such as team-based learning, patient-oriented problem solving, case-based learning, and game-based learning.
So, the goal of the course is to introduce medical students to infectious and immunological diseases and to discuss laboratory investigations to establish the diagnosis.

The course uses the basic college teaching-learning facilities that include the multi-media lecture halls, small rooms for discussion or tutorial, students’ microbiology practical hall, college library, e-library, and the central examination hall.
The Microbiology practical laboratory in the college is equipped with research microscope, student light microscopes, autoclave, bacteriological incubators, inoculation hood, centrifuge and other basic microbiology equipment, which are mainly used for student practical’s and student research projects.
The Clinical Microbiology laboratory of the Suhar regional hospital is actively involved to provide treated clinical samples and slides for students practical and learning activities.
