The Medical Education Unit at the College of Medicine & Health Sciences, National University of Science & Technology, organized an Online Certificate Course in Problem Based Learning (PBL) on 15th and 16th August 2023. Using a combination of synchronous and asynchronous modes, this course designed for health professions educators aimed in providing the necessary knowledge and skills to design problem based learning units/modules in their curriculum.
The course was facilitated by a group of faculty with rich experience and expertise in the field of inquiry based and problem based learning; Prof. Ciraj Ali Mohammed, Professor and Head, Medical Education, College of Medicine & Health Sciences, National University of Science & Technology, Oman, Dr Samar Ahmed, Associate Dean, Academic Affairs Dubai Medical College for Girls, Dubai, UAE and Dr. Soumendra Sahoo, Professor & Director, Centre for Transformative Learning, Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM), Malaysia.
The objectives of the course focused on appraising the principles of Problem Based Learning (PBL), ascertaining organizational aspects of PBL in specific learning environments, designing cases for PBL that enhance student engagement, ascertaining roles of a PBL Tutor to function as facilitator for learning, planning assessment for PBL and developing an evaluation framework for PBL.
About 30 faculty from various countries including Oman, Malaysia, Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, India and Pakistan who belonged to various health professions (medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, allied health disciplines) attended the course. The participants while providing the feedback conveyed their appreciation for the course content and the various approaches used in the course delivery. They also expressed their desire in attending such programmes in the future.
