About department

Family Medicine is the primary care medical specialty concerned with the total health care of the individual and family in their community. The educational mission of the Family Medicine clerkships is to teach and train the students to be a qualified doctor who have competence to provide high standard of compassionate, cost effective, holistic, and comprehensive health care with focus on health promotion, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative aspects to meet the health need of people of Oman and beyond.

Course Objectives

  • Enable to take focused and relevant history including red flag features in primary care set up.

  • Perform relevant and focused physical examination using appropriate skills and standard technique

  • Formulate differential diagnosis and provisional clinical diagnosis with causation and manifestation. 

  • Select relevant investigations based on recent advances to confirm the diagnosis

  • Construct evidence based appropriate management plan (non-pharmacological and -pharmacological) with follow up/referral if required.

  • Communicate effectively with patients/attendants and health care team with empathy and respect.

  • Identify importance of patient safety and ethics in patient care
