Undergraduate Program

BSc. Medical Laboratory Sciences

About the program

The program is a comprehensive, eight-semester curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience required to excel in the dynamic field of medical laboratory sciences. The program is structured to blend both theoretical and practical learning across its duration, ensuring students gain a deep understanding of the scientific principles and techniques used in medical diagnostics.

First Seven Semesters:

The initial seven semesters are a combination of theoretical coursework and practical training conducted on the university campus. During these semesters, students will be introduced to the core principles of medical laboratory science.

Students will benefit from the university’s laboratory facilities, which are fully equipped with instruments used in the medical laboratory setting. These facilities allow students to gain hands-on experience with diagnostic equipment, perform procedures, and develop proficiency in a wide range of laboratory tests.

The academic courses are complemented by practical sessions that enable students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world laboratory settings. Practical training in subjects such as hematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histology, Immunology, molecular biology and transfusion medicine is integrated into the program, ensuring that students are well-prepared to work across all medical laboratory fields.

Eighth Semester – Clinical Practicum:

In the final semester, students transition from the university campus to a clinical practicum, where they gain real-world experience in medical laboratory settings. This immersive clinical internship takes place in hospitals, clinics, or diagnostic laboratories, offering students the opportunity to apply their learned skills in live medical environments.

During the practicum, students will rotate through various laboratory fields, including: hematology, Blood bank, Microbiology, Clinical biochemistry and serology.

Successful completion of all required BMLS courses will result in a bachelor’s degree from the National University of Science and Technology.

Program Learning outcome:

BSc-MLS degree program in the National University of Science & Technology will prepare the graduate with the skills needed to work in various departments in medical laboratories. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduates will demonstrate the following competencies:

Knowledge:
Understanding the principles of laboratory testing, the selection of proper laboratory tests, analyse the data and interpret the results.

Professionalism:
Practice according to the protocols and safety, communicate effectively with colleagues, patients and health care providers and demonstrate ethical obligation to patient, public and profession.

Skills:
Perform different laboratory tests in areas such as clinical biochemistry, haematology, serology, microbiology, molecular biology, immunohematology, and histology and recognise the discrepancies in different laboratory tests.

Career Opportunities:

BSc-MLS program will prepare the graduate for many career opportunities in clinical analysis, public health, higher education, research, pharmaceutical manufacturing, genetic lab.
