There are five research themes that represent the focus of research activities at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. Research projects are funded by the Ministry of Higher education, Research, and Innovation, as well as internally funded by the National University.
This research group mainly focuses on research in studying the burden of diseases of public health importance. This includes epidemiology of disease, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, prevalence, outcomes, and prevailing disease prevention and control strategies. It is a diverse research group of clinicians, public health specialist and scientist from basic sciences with a rich experience in conducting research in these areas and have numerous publications in peer reviewed journals. The objective of the research is to provide insights to healthcare professionals as well as policy makers for developing prevention and control strategies to improve community health and wellbeing.
This research group mainly focuses on research in studying the types, causes, manifestations and consequences of epigenetic changes. The aim is to suggest practical rectification solutions to epigenetic change outcomes such as chromosomal abnormalities, malignancies, mental disorders, body system failures and oxidative stress. Moreover, recommendations and guidelines to manage the causative effectors shall be shared with the appropriate parties including industry, community, and government. The group is diverse and includes members from basic and clinical sciences.
This research group mainly focuses on research in studying non-communicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus, vitamin D deficiency, metabolic syndromes, polycystic ovary syndrome, bone, and joint diseases. The aim is to minimize the burden of non-communicable diseases in Oman and to improve the public health and quality of patient life.
This research group mainly focuses on generating evidence which can influence policy and facilitate reforms in health professions education. The aim is to address the professional core competencies in education and practice. The group members are experienced in providing consultancy related to curriculum development, assessment design, interprofessional education, academic leadership, program evaluation and change management.
This research group mainly focuses is to identify mental health sequelae and effective innovative interventions related to the Covid-19 Pandemic and consequent Lockdown. The aim is to raise awareness about mental illnesses and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health, hoping to reduce psychiatric morbidity and improve resilience in the population. The group members are experienced in addressing mental health issues and assessing their impact.
The Medical Research Center has multiple facilities that are equipped with advanced technologies.
It has laminar flow hood, CO2 incubators, inverted fluorescent microscopes and other necessary facilities.
It has thermal cycler PCR and Real-Time-PCR, electrophoresis equipment, refrigerated centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and deep freezers.
It has centrifuges (clinical, super-speed, micro-ultracentrifuge), spectrophotometers (UV and fluorescence) gel electrophoresis, microscopes, and histology equipment.
It has equipment to conduct immunoprecipitation techniques, Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and Western blotting.
