Collaborative research initiative aimed at enhancing interprofessional learning among healthcare students

On Thursday, 13 March 2025, CoP faculty and students participated in an Interprofessioanl Education activtiy at College of Nursing at Sultan Qaboos University. They had the opportunity to engage in a simulated ward round, where a standardized patient (actor, not mannequin) was involved. The case focused on sickle cell disease, a complex condition that requires a multidisciplinary approach for effective management. To further enhance the realism of the scenario, the patient actor was attached to a monitor for vital signs monitoring, allowing students to interact with real-time data and integrate it into their decision-making process. Additionally, a medication trolley was used to replicate a real hospital environment, giving pharmacy students the opportunity to interact with the tools and equipment they would encounter in clinical practice.

During the ward round, our five pharmacy students, alongside nursing, medicine, and social work students, worked together to assess, manage, and discuss the patient case. This interprofessional collaboration allowed students to experience first hand  role each healthcare professional plays in patient care. Emphasis was placed on teamwork, effective communication, and shared decision-making—crucial elements for achieving optimal patient outcomes, especially in the management of chronic conditions like sickle cell disease. The holistic approach to the case was essential in teaching students the value of working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
