Summary
This research proposal intends to explore the reasons for traffic accidents in Muscat – Oman and provide practical suggestions to improve road safety issues in the city. To this end, the proposal is expected to instigate and examine existing information on accident places, driver practices, road conditions, and traffic enforcement strategies in Muscat. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the collected data are expected to create patterns and trends in road accidents and their causes through meticulous data collecting and analysis. In conclusion, the results of the current proposal will allow making evidence-based recommendations on measures that would help protect the general public and ensure the greatest level of safety on Muscat’s roads. The intended long-term outcome of the research is to minimize the actual number of road traffic accidents occurring in Muscat and their severity.
Objectives
The major objective of this research is to investigate the most common places where traffic accidents occur in Muscat, identifying the underlying causes of these accidents, and proposing appropriate solutions.
The detailed objectives of this research are:
1- To assess the current status of accidents in Muscat which are characterized by frequency, severity, and the responsibility lies on which factors.
2- To define the main causes and hazard factors related to traffic accidents in Muscat, including the road structure, driver behavior, vehicle health and weather factors.
3- To evaluate the effectiveness of the current Traffic management policies and road safety packages that are implemented in Muscat.
4- To propose suitable solutions to curb the road accident occurrence and improve road safety in Muscat.
