National University's Team Khanjar participated in Shell Eco Marathon – Asia 2019, Kualalumpur, Malaysia

Shell Eco-marathon is a unique global programme, for science, technology, engineering and maths students to design and build ultra-energy-efficient cars, and then take them out on the track in competition. This year, Shell Eco Marathon Asia was held at Sepang International Circuit Race track, Kualalumpur, Malaysia. Team Khanjar which has seven boys and three girls from College of Engineering, National University worked more than 10 months to develop an ultra-efficiency unique gasoline car that promises to consume less fuel and have more efficiency. Team khanjar participated in this prestigious global event of Shell Eco Marathon Asia-2019 with their 4 stroke air cooled gasoline Engine car during 28th April to 2nd May 2019 at Kualalumpur, Malaysia.

Before participating in Shell’s prestigious Eco-Marathon challenge, National University and Shell Development Oman LLC signed an MoU in the last week of May 2018. Immediate after memorandum of understanding, a team comprising ten students from various discipline had been formed under the name of “Team Khanjar.” After that, Team decided to build a Gasoline car and decided to participate in Prototype IC Engine category. The objective of building the car was to design and develop an eco-friendly, energy-efficient car, something which is highly sought-after around the world. The College of Engineering students designed the car from scratch, keeping high efficiency in mind. Achieving high efficiency had the added advantage of usually saving weight, which improved the fuel efficiency of the car - the main goal of the project. The students achieved this goal through using lightweight materials of carbon fiber for full body, aerodynamic design, an innovative power transmission train etc. The specification of the vehicle is as follows; Engine: Air cooled 35cc Gasoline 4 stroke Engine; Average Speed: Approx.…≈ 30-40km/hr; Weight of the vehicle: Approx... ≈ 54 Kilograms; Transmission: Rear wheel drive – 2 stage step reducer transmission, belt drive system with a gear and velocity ratio of 10:1. ; Dimensions: Height/length/width = 600/2700/700 mm.

After giving attractive flashy eye catching orange color painting to the car, Team managed to do logistics from Muscat to Kualalumpur in the beginning week of April 2019. The team went to Malaysia in the last week of April 2019, to take part of Shell Eco Marathon Asia challenge. In the beginning day of event, the inspection of car was tested by Shell’s safety and Technical inspection team in ASIA 2019 competition and the car cleared all technical and safety inspection as third team among all teams in its category. Team scored 11/11marks in technical and safety testing and got prestigious sticker from the organizers of Shell Eco Marathon Asia-2019. Immediate after, Team Khanjar put their car on the race track and drove the car. Unfortunately, there was a small bearing issue which affected the team’s full completion of the racing Track. However team managed to drive the car nearly 2km on the race track. The real fact is running with the car on the track in this prestigious international event by clearing technical documentation and technical inspection is a marvelous achievement which was successfully done by Team Khanjar at sepang International Circuit. Now, Team Khanjar has made a wonderful path to their National university juniors to participate in this International event in the coming years.
