Brief Guidelines

The below links will provide you a lot of useful information that you will need to know before you start your studies. You can browse, read the information and watch the videos from these pages.

Logging in: At the time of joining NU, by completing the admission process, you are provided with the unique username and password by the IT Services. This unique username and password will give you access to systems and resources at the University. It has the format of: NU123456 (‘NU’ - National University, ‘12’ – academic year of joining, ‘3456’ – joining serial number).

Your password will work for the following student systems in the University – Domain, MyNU Personalised Portal, WiFi, NU Learn, Online Library Resources, Module Registration, Printing, Campus WiFi and so on.

Remember to keep your password details safe, as it allows access to your information and is necessary to complete tasks related to your study.

Changing Your Password: You must change your domain password (the password you use to log on to the computers in University labs or library or open access facilities) at least once in a month or two. Your domain password is linked to several other systems such as NU Learn, e-Library, Personalised Portal, Campus WiFi, Module Registration and so on. Therefore, when you change the domain password all the linked passwords also will change automatically.

Your new password:

  • Must be at least 8 characters in length
  • Must not contain all or part of your name or username
  • It should not include simple words, for example "water"
  • Must contain characters from 3 of the following 4 categories:
    • Upper case characters (A..Z)
    • Lower case characters (a..z)
    • Numbers (0..9)
    • Non-alphanumeric (e.g. symbols such as !,$,#)

Make sure you keep your password secret and never write it down especially together with your username.

Student Email: NU has made agreement with Gmail which provides unlimited storage of file and email message space that you can use. Find out more about your email address and how to access your mailbox.

Email Address: The standard format of email address for a student at NU is ahmed180388@nu.edu.om. It is important that you record this address accurately – the @, as well as the dots are vital and there must be no spaces in the address. Also, your email address is always displayed in your personalised area in NU portal (student home page).

Password: The email password is initially provided in your personalised area in NU portal. You will need to reset this password at your first login. You can change your email password using the options in your email account.

Access to Email: The student email system is Web-based, and can be accessed using Internet browsing software such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. There are 3 ways to access the student email system:

- From the link available on NU website/student home page or;
- Directly accessing the URL https://mail.nu.edu.om or;
- Access through Gmail page in Google.

NU Online Learning Management Systems (LMS): NU provides various online Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as SOLE, Blackboard, and Moodle. These online LMS tools provides information (including materials and contacts) for all of the courses or modules you are enrolled in at University. It also provides access to other features to help you manage your studies, including announcements, setting and tracking tasks and keeping a calendar. You will find a lot of useful study information there, but it is not for basic everyday information like where to find drinking water on campus. Your study subjects/modules will make use of NU LMS and you should therefore get into the habit of logging on to NU Learning Management System every day.

Accessing NU LMS: As NU LMSs are web-based systems, you can access it through NU website (student home page).

Library: The Library is a great starting point for finding information. NU has four large physical libraries located at each campus. In addition, Library has several online databases, books, journals and other resources for your course work. You can access library website from the student home page in an internet browser.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. Plagiarism may be intentional, or unintentional. The University regards plagiarism as a very serious offence and you’re strongly advised to study the Assessment Regulations in full.

The NU IT Services provides a tool Turnitin, to support students and staff in identifying potential Plagiarism. The Web-based tool Turnitin checks submitted documents against its database, websites, other electronic resources with the aim of identifying similarities. The similarity results can help in improving students’ writing and to avoid potential plagiarism.

The Turnitin tool is integrated in your online Learning Management Systems at NU.

Labs, Classrooms and Open Access Facilities: NU IT Services provides state-of-the-art technologies in labs, classrooms, and open access facilities across campuses. It centrally maintains and support these facilities along with lab technicians/instructors. These facilities can be used by students during timetabled hours, and other free times.

Software: NU has huge list of software to support your academic and administrative activities. These software are licensed and you can access these software in several specialised labs and other common facilities depending on the software. In addition, you can also have some software to use at home that are listed in Student Homepage.
