Hear from Department Head

Asst.Prof. Hafez Al Sadeq
Head of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department

Welcome to the Department which focuses on a unique connection between the built and the natural environment. When we talk of built environment many of them misunderstand that it only deals with construction of residential buildings, but it is not so, it also deals with construction, restoration, planning, designing, cost estimation, risk analysis and management of new and existing small to mega structures like sky scrapers, roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, dams, shopping malls etc. are few to mention. Building and construction projects use many natural resources which exploit the nature that leads to climate change, global warming, water and energy crises, construction wastes, solid wastes etc., and are major environmental issues which are currently affecting the world. Our role is to design, plan, mitigate and adapt technology to provide better living to the society keeping the balance between built and the natural environment.

The construction industry is one among the largest industries operating in Sultanate of Oman and is the main contributor in sultanates growing economic development. Indeed, the total value of projects planned and under construction in a range of sectors, including energy, manufacturing, transport and utilities, currently stands at $163.5bn – equivalent to twice Oman’s annual GDP. Meanwhile, demand from the private real estate sector is also driving growth, with developers engaged in projects ranging from grade-A office buildings to shopping malls and integrated tourism complexes (Construction Report 2016).

The department of Built and Natural Environment is equipped with state of art laboratories with most modern equipment to carry out research projects. The department has been awarded 4 Undergraduate Research project and One Open Research grant project by The Research Council of Oman.
