NU-CoE student won first prize for “Children Car Driven by Solar Energy” at 7th technical festival, sultan qaboos university, oman

Adnan Mohammed Al Rawahi, a budding scientist and a Level 04 Electrical Power Engineering student of NU College of Engineering(NU-CoE) has won the 1st position for developing “Children’s Solar Car with Optimized Performance” in the National Level Student technical project Competition organized by joint efforts of Information Technology Authority (ITA), Technovation, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and Sultan Qaboos University. The 7th Technical Festival was held during 19-22nd Feb 2017 at Sultan Qaboos University(SQU), Muscat, Oman. In this festival a competition on “Technical Projects” for students is organized in different areas of Engineering such as: Telecommunication, Internet Technology, Electrical & Electronic, Computer Software and other similar areas. Mr Adnan received the cash prize of OMR 250 (650 USD) and received a Memento from Dr and Professor Ali Huwaishal Al Shuaili, Deputy V.C & Administrative and Financial Affairs, SQU. The competition was held under the campaign of “Sustainable Knowledge Society by Leveraging Information and Technology” by ITA.

The technical project presents the development of hardware module of “Solar Energy Driven Car” suitable for children with optimized performance. The project developed the children-car using major technical part such as: aerodynamic shape of solar panel, energy story batteries and Brush-Less Direct-Current (BLDC) motor. Mr Adnan presented the calculation of torque, power and speed and demonstrated the capacity of the motor. The developed car is having weight of 11kg and it is able to carry the children weight upto 25kgs. The performance of car is validated technically and it is found the car is cost effective in nature. Online survey shows that 93.3% of the respondents, exclusively preferred to have the solar operated cars for their children over simply battery operated cars.

The technical festival in turn has attracted all nation-wide budding scientist and participations from various experts from University and institutions. Furthermore the techno-festival has attracted industrial and academic presenters as well as student participations. Mr Adnan has expressed the deepest appreciation to supervisor Dr. Dharmasa & HoD, Mr Ali Abdullah Al- Mahruqi for their support throughout the completion of the project. Mr Adnan also expressed sincere thanks to Mr. Abdullah Al Yahyai, Haya Water, Oman and NU College Engineering, Management & Executives.
